Create a Business Plan

Your business plan will also help you secure financing as you begin to approach lenders for startup capital.

A good business plan should lay out your entire vision for the law firm. It should include your mission statement, the forecast for profitability, as well as your plans for growth and expansion, especially over your first few years.

Choose a Specialty for Your Law Practice

Every lawyer needs a specialty. For example, you might specialize in corporate litigation, personal injury law, or divorce law. There are many areas to choose from, but having a specialty will help you attract specific clients and provide a competitive angle when it comes to developing a marketing plan.

Here is a resource that will help you find quality legal leads.

Name Your Firm

You’ll also need to choose a name for your firm. Traditionally, law firms are named for the partners at the firm. Thus a family firm would use the last name of the family running the firm, or you could use the last names of the two or three primary partners.

Keep in mind that you can name your firm anything you like. There are no rules. Just be sure to name it something memorable so that it will be easier to market.

Choose a Location

Next, choose a location. You’ll want to choose a commercial property that’s easy for clients to find and that will provide access to various business leaders in the community.

Secure Financing

It’s no secret that starting a new business is expensive. This includes starting a law firm from scratch. The key is to have a strong business plan ready that will allow potential investors to see they are being presented with a solid investment opportunity.

You might approach traditional lending institutions or private investors. Just be aware that you’ll almost certainly need more money for startup capital than you might have ever expected.

Join Local Legal Organizations

Every new firm needs to join local legal organizations. This will give you a chance to network with other lawyers in the area, thus building a strong professional network that can help you bring in more clients.

Becoming a successful lawyer takes a lot of hard work. Fortunately, these tips for starting a law firm will help make the process a little easier.
