The Grafties are Love Island‘s mock awards ceremony. Islanders watch clips grouped into categories, viewers vote for winners from a selected nominee set, and those winners can receive trophies and give acceptance speeches. Movie Night also exposes recorded moments to the villa, but its classic UK format is a screening game: two teams answer questions and the winning side chooses which movie-titled clip plays next.
That is the simple difference. The Grafties ask, “Who won this category?” Movie Night asks, “Which clip do you want to open?” Both can reveal flirting, private comments and behavior that other Islanders have not seen.
The comparison became timely again when the Grafties returned on July 21, 2026. The names and nominated couples belonged to that series, but the basic distinction is reusable.
Why are they called the Grafties?
“Grafties” is a joke built from “graft” and the name of an awards show. In ordinary British English, graft suggests hard work. Inside the villa, to graft means putting time and attention into winning someone over, usually through flirting, chats and small romantic efforts. A current Love Island slang glossary defines graft as dedicating time and attention to another Islander in the hope of romantic interest.
The title turns a piece of villa dating slang into the name of an awards night. Not every category is literally about flirting, however. Categories can also focus on arguments, plot twists, emotional scenes or awkward behavior.
How do the Grafties work?
The first Grafties appeared as a new segment in season 10 in 2023. In that original version, each category had three nominees. The Islanders watched the nominated clips, then learned which nominee the public had selected. The winner collected a trophy and delivered an acceptance speech, giving the segment the shape of a deliberately uncomfortable awards night. That launch-era format is the clearest model for understanding the event.
The public does not choose freely from every second filmed in the villa. Viewers vote among the categories and nominees placed before them. Production still determines the category names, the candidate clips and the edited footage attached to each nomination.
ITV’s official record of the 2023 ceremony says the winners were chosen through Love Island Instagram Stories. That edition included categories such as Flirtiest Performance, Most Snakey Sitch, Best Head to Head and Mad Moves. The labels can change from one series to another without changing the central structure: nominations, clips, a public choice, a trophy and a speech.
What happens during Movie Night?
Movie Night is built around the screening rather than the award. Islanders sit together and watch selected footage from their time in the villa, often including conversations or romantic behavior that only the television audience has already seen.
In the 2023 UK version, the boys and girls formed opposing teams and answered questions by text. The team closest to the correct answer got to select the next film from a board of punning titles. Choosing a title then opened the associated clip. The episode used titles such as The Lying, the Mitch and the Wardrobe and Sin-Der-Ella, a quiz-and-selection mechanism that made the sequence feel partly like a game.
Winning a Movie Night question does not mean a contestant has won an award or received public approval. It gives a team a choice about what to screen next. Exact rules can change, so that description should be read as the classic UK model rather than a permanent rule for every season and international version.

These are the common versions described above, not a promise for every future edition. Producers can alter voting, category and clip-selection details. You can usually identify the event by looking at the frame around the footage: awards and winners indicate the Grafties, while a cinema setting and selectable film titles indicate Movie Night.
Why do the two events feel so similar?
Both formats use the same dramatic advantage. Viewers have seen private chats, confessionals and split-villa behavior, while the contestants have only experienced their own part of the story. A shared screening closes some of that information gap in front of the whole cast.
That is why people sometimes call the Grafties a second Movie Night. The comparison describes the effect, but it hides the mechanism. At the Grafties, a clip is evidence for a nomination and the reveal ends with a public winner. During Movie Night, the clip is the prize behind a movie title, and the reveal follows a team choice.
If a scene includes named categories, several nominees and an acceptance speech, it is the Grafties. If the Islanders are choosing pun-filled films from a board after a quiz, it is Movie Night. The footage may produce the same kind of confrontation, but the show is asking a different question.
