    The kiln is the dividing line. Before firing, a clay body can be shaped, dried, and often reclaimed with water. After firing, it becomes a hard ceramic object with a permanent shape.

    In pottery and everyday shopping, “ceramic” usually means fired clay. In materials science, ceramic is wider. It also covers nonmetallic, inorganic materials such as alumina, zirconia, and silicon carbide.

    Clay is a fine mineral material that becomes plastic when mixed with water. Potters also use “clay” to mean a prepared clay body, which may blend clay minerals with quartz, feldspar, grog, or other ingredients.

    That is why a block of pottery clay feels so different from ordinary dirt. Its tiny plate-like particles slide when wet, hold a shape, and shrink as water leaves.

    • It can be pinched, coiled, slab-built, sculpted, rolled, or thrown on a wheel.
    • It becomes leather-hard and then bone-dry before firing.
    • It stays fragile before firing, even when it feels hard.
    • Many unfired scraps can be slaked down and reclaimed with water.
    • Its color and firing behavior depend on minerals, iron content, particle size, and added materials.

    Common pottery materials include earthenware clays, stoneware bodies, porcelain bodies, ball clay, kaolin, fire clay, feldspar, silica, and grog. Kaolin is especially important in porcelain, while ball clay is often blended in for plasticity.

    Not every product with “clay” on the label is pottery clay. Polymer clay is a plastic modeling compound. Air-dry clay hardens without kiln firing. Cosmetic clays such as kaolin and bentonite are used on skin, not as dinnerware bodies.

    Ceramic is a hard material made by heating inorganic, nonmetallic ingredients until they bond into a stable body. In a pottery studio, that usually means shaped clay fired in a kiln.

    Firing changes the clay body. Water leaves, particles bond, glassy phases can form, and the object no longer returns to soft clay when wet.

    • Earthenware, terra cotta, stoneware, porcelain, and bone china are ceramic.
    • Tiles, bricks, mugs, plates, sculptures, sinks, and many electrical insulators are ceramic.
    • Advanced ceramics can use refined powders instead of natural clay.
    • Silicon carbide, alumina, and zirconia appear in industrial, medical, electronic, and high-heat uses.

    Ceramic does not always mean waterproof. Low-fired earthenware can remain porous unless it is glazed. Mature stoneware and porcelain are much denser, and a good glaze can seal many porous bodies for practical use.

    The short version: clay is the material you form. Ceramic is the material after heat has made that form permanent.

    What firing changes

    Firing is more than drying. Dry clay can often be softened again, but fired clay has gone through permanent physical and chemical changes.

    1. Drying: free water leaves the clay, often near 212°F / 100°C.
    2. Dehydration: chemically bound water leaves clay minerals at higher heat.
    3. Quartz inversion: quartz particles change volume around 1,063°F / 573°C, so uneven heating can cause cracks.
    4. Sintering and vitrification: particles bond, pores shrink, and glassy phases may form.
    5. Cooling: the fired structure locks in as the kiln drops in temperature.

    Earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain differ because their clay bodies mature at different heat levels. Earthenware is usually lower-fired and more porous. Stoneware is fired hotter and becomes denser. Porcelain is usually kaolin-rich, high-fired, white, and often translucent when thin.

    Cone numbers are not simple thermometer readings. A pyrometric cone responds to heatwork, which means time and temperature together. That is why two firing schedules can reach similar cone results without having identical clocks or peak temperatures.

    Pottery and related terms

    Pottery is the craft and the ware made by forming clay and firing it. In casual speech, pottery often points to vessels, mugs, bowls, plates, and vases.

    Ceramics is broader. A studio potter making mugs is working in both pottery and ceramics. A factory making spark plugs, dental crowns, or semiconductor parts is working in ceramics, but not pottery.

    • Earthenware: lower-fired ceramic. Terra cotta flowerpots are a familiar example.
    • Stoneware: denser, tougher ceramic used for mugs, crocks, vases, and dinnerware.
    • Porcelain: usually white, fine, kaolin-rich ceramic that can be translucent when thin.
    • Bone china: a porcelain-family ceramic made with bone ash.
    • Terra cotta: reddish earthenware, usually low-fired and often porous.

    So the overlap is simple. All pottery is ceramic, but not all ceramics are pottery.

    What the Difference Changes for Makers and Buyers

    For a maker, clay is the working stage. You wedge it, form it, dry it, bisque-fire it, glaze it, and fire it again when the process calls for that.

    For a buyer, ceramic is usually the finished stage. A mug, plate, tile, planter, or sink sold as “ceramic” has already been fired.

    • A hard “clay pot” in a store is normally a ceramic pot made from clay.
    • A damp lump of pottery clay is not ceramic ware yet.
    • An unglazed terra cotta planter is ceramic, but it can still absorb water.
    • A glazed ceramic has a glassy coating for color, surface finish, and water resistance.
    • Food use depends on the fired body, glaze fit, glaze chemistry, and the maker’s instructions.

    If a label says “clay” and the object is hard, ringy, and water-resistant, the label is probably naming the original material. If a label says “ceramic” and the object crumbles or softens in water, it may be an unfired craft product or a very weak low-fire body.

    Polymer clay and air-dry clay

    Polymer clay is not ceramic clay. It is a plastic modeling material, commonly based on PVC, that cures at low oven temperatures rather than maturing in a kiln.

    • It stays workable until baked.
    • It is useful for jewelry, miniatures, small sculpture, and fine detail.
    • Its hardened result is plastic, not fired ceramic.

    Air-dry clay is also different from fired ceramic. It hardens as water leaves and binders set, not because the body sinters or vitrifies in a kiln.

    • It often hardens within a day or two.
    • It is useful for kids’ crafts, beginner sculpting, and prototypes.
    • It is usually less durable than fired clay.
    • It should not be treated like functional pottery unless the product specifically says so.

    Common confusions

    • Pottery and ceramics are not opposite categories. Pottery is one part of ceramics.
    • Bone china is ceramic, even though the recipe includes bone ash.
    • Stoneware is ceramic, not carved natural stone.
    • A museum label may say “clay” to describe material, but the object may be fired ceramic. Check the full label when condition or technique is important.
    • Polymer clay has “clay” in the name, but it is a plastic product.
    • Air-dry clay can become hard, but it does not become kiln-fired ceramic.
    • Terra cotta is low-fired earthenware ceramic, not a separate material family.

    How to tell them apart

    Do not soak, scratch, or chip anything valuable. For ordinary craft pieces and store-bought objects, these clues help.

    • Water drop: quick softening points to unfired clay or air-dry clay. Slow absorption points to porous ceramic, often unglazed earthenware. Beading points to glaze or a dense fired surface.
    • Tap sound: a dull thud can mean porous low-fire ceramic or unfired material. A clear ring often points to denser stoneware or porcelain.
    • Bottom or chip: reddish and porous suggests earthenware. Dense gray or brown suggests stoneware. White, fine, and glassy suggests porcelain.
    • Scratch feel: a surface that scratches easily with a fingernail is probably unfired, air-dry, or otherwise weakly hardened.
    • Commercial function: a mug, plate, tile, planter, or sink made for real use is almost always ceramic, even if its label says clay.
