WAFCON stands for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the African championship for senior women’s national teams. AFCON stands for the Africa Cup of Nations, the corresponding championship for senior men’s national teams. Both are organized by the Confederation of African Football, or CAF, but they are separate tournaments. They share a governing body, not a competition table.

WAFCON is a complete women’s championship with its own qualifying process and field of teams. It also has a separate schedule, champion and historical record. “Women’s AFCON” is another short name for that tournament, while AFCON refers to the men’s championship.

WAFCON and AFCON are parallel championships

WAFCON and AFCON Are Separate Championships

The two tournaments have the same continental purpose: each decides an African champion among national teams. The permanent difference is which senior national teams take part. WAFCON is the women’s competition. AFCON, whose official full name does not include the word “men’s,” is the competition for senior men’s national teams.

They sit beside one another under CAF with separate brackets. A country can qualify for one while missing the other because its men’s and women’s teams follow separate campaigns. The finals also use different dates, and each title belongs only to the competition in which it was won.

This is why a phrase such as “Nigeria are AFCON champions” is incomplete when the women’s team is meant. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have their own WAFCON record, while the men’s national team competes for AFCON. The country name may be the same, but the team, tournament and title history are not.

Why “WAFCON” and “Women’s AFCON” mean the same thing

CAF officially renamed the women’s tournament the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on August 6, 2015. The 2016 edition in Cameroon was the first played under the new name, which deliberately mirrored the title of the men’s competition.

The full name can be shortened in two common ways:

    • WAFCON takes the first letter of “Women’s” and adds AFCON.
    • Women’s AFCON spells out the same idea while keeping the familiar men’s-tournament acronym.

CAF uses both forms in its own coverage. A schedule labeled “WAFCON 2026” and an article labeled “Women’s AFCON 2026” therefore refer to the same women’s championship. Neither wording changes the teams involved or creates a separate competition.

The shorter form can still look confusing because the official men’s name is simply Africa Cup of Nations. In ordinary football coverage, an unqualified “AFCON” normally means the men’s event. Writers add either the W or the word “Women’s” when they mean the women’s tournament.

The permanent differences are separate from the 2026 format

Tournament formats can change from one edition to another, so the number of teams or World Cup places should not become part of the basic definition.

Question WAFCON AFCON Permanent or edition-specific?
What does the acronym mean? Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Africa Cup of Nations Permanent

How many teams play in the 2026 women’s finals? 16 Not a WAFCON rule for the men’s event Specific to 2026 WAFCON
Does it award places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup? The 2026 edition does No Specific to the 2026 women’s cycle

The 2026 WAFCON was the first edition expanded from 12 teams to 16. Those 16 teams were placed in four groups of four, followed by quarter-finals. The tournament also helps determine Africa’s qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Those details explain the stakes in current coverage, but they do not define WAFCON forever. CAF may alter a future field size, schedule or qualification system without changing what the acronym means or which national teams the competition serves.

Why Nigeria, Malawi and WAFCON appeared together

The acronym drew fresh attention when the 2026 tournament opened in Morocco. Nigeria entered as the defending champion and the competition’s most successful team, with ten titles. Its Group C opponents were Zambia, Egypt and Malawi.

For a reader who knows the men’s AFCON, a Nigeria–Malawi WAFCON headline can look like an unusual version of the same event. It is better understood as a fixture in CAF’s separate women’s continental championship. The familiar country names and similar tournament branding reflect the shared organizer, not a shared competition.

The same reading continues after the 2026 tournament. WAFCON or Women’s AFCON identifies the senior women’s championship, while AFCON on its own identifies the senior men’s event. CAF designed the related names, but the teams, qualification campaigns and titles remain separate.
