In A Nutshell
Abraham Lincoln is famous for many things, chief among them being the 16th United States President and that whole slave emancipation thing. However, it turns out he was one heck of a great wrestler in his youth, to the point that he’s a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame.
The Whole Bushel
When you think of physically daunting United States presidents, Abraham Lincoln is probably one of the first to spring to mind thanks to his height. He stood 6’4″ and in his youth weighed in at around 185 pounds. While we view him today as a relatively quiet, humble man who freed the slaves, there was a time in his younger years when he went nearly undefeated for 12 years in the wrestling ring.
The strapping young Lincoln got into the ring hundreds of times during those years, and by all accounts was defeated only once. His most celebrated match was against a famous county wrestling champion who started trying to stomp on Lincoln out of frustration—this turned out to be a mistake. Lincoln proceeded to throttle this champion wrestler into unconsciousness.
The self-taught, self-educated Lincoln has become one of the most famous and beloved politicians in history, and numerous movies have been made about him. Sadly, none have included this little factoid about his induction into the Wrestling Hall of Fame, though his ability to kick some butt might make that Vampire Hunter movie a lot more plausible.
