What Is A Cryptid, Really?

For skeptics, the idea of cryptozoology is paranormal bunk that has more to do with looking for mythical monsters than real science. In 2004, Chad Arment’s cryptozoology textbook outlined the four different types of cryptids that should be under investigation: animals outside their usual geographic range, individuals within a species that have some extraordinary characteristic, creatures that look like a species declared extinct, and creatures that are completely unlike anything accepted by science. This is an attempt to make cryptozoology a little more accepted in the scientific community and to get rid of the idea of other types of cryptids, like those whose existence is passed down in folklore and myth.

The Difference Between A Chimera And The Chimera

The Chimera was a creature from Greek mythology, having the body and head of a lion, a second goat’s head, and the tail of a snake. A chimera, however, can be any creature made up of the parts of different animals, and there are plenty of chimeras in world mythologies. Even Capricorn, today’s constellation and zodiac symbol, is technically a chimera with the body of a goat and the tail of a snake or fish.

The Different Types Of Autism

The term “autism” refers to a series of disorders that are largely characterized by the amount of difficulty the person has with social and communication skills. Those diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome are on the high-functioning end of the spectrum, often possessing a high intelligence along with their social difficulties. Childhood disintegrative disorder is characterized by a regression into autistic symptoms where there were none before, PDD-NOS is diagnosed when a child doesn’t meet the full criteria for autism but displays some characteristics, and Rett syndrome is a physically debilitating version of the disorder that strikes mostly girls.

The Differences Between Early Printing Techniques

If you’d like to impress some literary-minded or artistic friends, you can learn to tell the difference between early printmaking techniques by looking for a few simple giveaways. Illustrations made by relief printing will typically have shadows that are made with straight lines rather than the cross-hatching techniques used in intaglio printing methods. Most intaglio methods also leave traces of the print plate behind because of the pressure required to transfer the image, and sometimes a crisp line will even tell you that the original plate was made with an engraving process rather than an acid bath.

The Difference Between Albinism, Leucism & Isabellinism

The different types of albinism all have to do with the body’s inability to produce melanin, leading to white, gray, or cream-colored hair and skin (but not necessarily red eyes). Leucism occurs when color pigments are produced in a lower amount than normal, and normal skin, fur, or feather patterns and textures remain. Isabellinism happens when normally dark-pigmented areas develop as a sort of washed-out grayish-yellow, and it’s supposedly named for an archduchess who refused to remove her underwear for three years.

The Six (Or 30+) Different Types Of Stories

Movies, books, and television shows can seem pretty formulaic by now. Watch enough, and you know when the big reveal is going to be coming, right? That’s no coincidence. A University of Nebraska professor has found that no matter the genre, the author the time period the story is from, works of fiction only have six different trajectories. And as for story, early screenwriters decided there were only about 36 different types of stories you could tell.

The Difference Between Whisky, Whiskey, Scotch & Bourbon

The processes of making scotch, whiskey, and bourbon are very similar, but it’s only scotch if it’s made in Scotland, just like it’s only bourbon if it’s made in the United States. Whiskey and scotch guidelines allow for the alcohol to be aged in barrels other than the very specific charred white oak barrels used in bourbon production. And, to make things more complicated, whiskey spelled without the “e” is scotch.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Happens In Summer, Too

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is something that we mainly associate with the long winter months and the lack of sunshine. Those long, dark days can make us feel depressed and irritable and leave us with no energy whatsoever. In some cases, it’s so severe it’s treated with medication. Even though it’s usually associated with the time of the year when the Sun only makes short appearances and the nights are longer than the days, it can happen to people in the summer, too. The symptoms are somewhat similar, with both suffering from depression while the winter version is associated with sleeping too much and the summer version with sleeping too little.

Is This A Sunrise Or A Sunset?

Say you have a still photo of the Sun hovering over the horizon. Can you tell if it’s a sunrise or a sunset? A pair of atmospheric physicists who have done considerable research cataloging and documenting the colors that go along with the beginning and the end of the day say you can’t tell the difference. They say the two events are symmetrical and one’s just running in a perfect reverse of the other. Neil deGrasse Tyson, though, says that you can use a simple trick to bust late-sleeping movie producers trying to pass off a sunset played in reverse as a sunrise. If it’s north of the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun should be moving up and to the right.

The Difference Between Extraterrestrials And Ultraterrestrials

While both of these words are etymologically similar in terms of meaning “from beyond Earth,” they are used by conspiracy theorists and UFOlogists in markedly different ways. An extraterrestrial is generally considered to be an entity from beyond Earth but within the universe as we know it, such as from another planet or star system. Ultraterrestrials are beings who come from beyond the realm of human experience altogether, whether from a parallel universe, alternate dimension, or another plane of reality intersecting with our own. This theory is used to explain other strange phenomena that often accompany UFO sightings, such as time discrepancies, mysterious flying creatures, poltergeist activity, and mysterious Men in Black.
