Know Your Hair Type

It is vital that you know your hair type before you purchase any products for your strands. Even if you get top-of-the-line haircare products, you can still have disastrous results if they are not meant for your specific hair type.

You can determine your hair type by many factors, including length, texture, and thickness of strands. You should also factor in how often you generally need to wash your hair before it gets oily, as well as your exercise level.

Once you know your hair type, you can then invest in haircare products that will benefit your locks the most. For instance, if your hair is naturally curly and you want to emphasize those curls, you probably do not want to buy product that promises to make it sleek and shiny.

Avoid Hot Water

Hot water can be incredibly damaging to your hair and dry it out past the salvation of any product. When you take a shower, it is vital that you use lukewarm water throughout when you wash your hair and body. You can also get the added benefit of keeping the moisture in your skin, as hot water can cause dryness.

Some hair experts even recommend using cold water when you rinse out your conditioner. This temperature will lock the moisture in, so rather than drying out, your hair will shine.

In addition, cold water closes your hair cuticles, which will preserve nutrients from the hair products that you put in your locks. The oils and serums will make your hair extra shiny and soft when it dries out of the shower.

Add in More Protein

Even though you should focus on getting the right product for your hair, diet is equally as important for maintaining a healthy scalp and naturally healthy hair. One of the easiest ways to boost your scalp health is by adding more protein into your diet.

Some of the best sources of protein include:

  • fish
  • poultry
  • beans
  • dairy
  • eggs

If you do not get enough protein in your diet, it can visibly affect your hair health. Protein deficiency may cause brittle strands and color to fade out of your hair more quickly. Get plenty of protein for shiny hair and longer lasting color overall.

Protect Your Strands From Heat

Along with hot showers, heat damage from styling tools can also cause major damage to your hair if you are not careful. If you have time after your shower, it is a good idea to air dry your strands, so that you avoid using any styling tools at all on them.

You can take steps to protect your hair from the direct heat of styling tools such as curling irons and blow dryers with heat protectant serum or spray. These products are available for many different hair types and will form a barrier between your locks and the direct application of heat.

If you only use a blow dryer, you can activate the cool setting so that your hair is not faced with as much heat. Overall, try limiting heat products on your hair, and when you do use them, make sure you use a heat protectant beforehand.

Eat Plenty of Zinc

Vitamins and nutrients are essential in maintaining hair health in tandem with the products that work for your strands. If you notice your hair falling out more than normal, you may need to talk to your doctor about a zinc deficiency.

There are many different foods that offer rich amounts of zinc so you can get your daily requirement and have healthy hair. Some of these foods include:

  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • nuts

If you still struggle to get more nutrients like zinc into your diet, then you can take vitamins to supplement your nutritional intake. For instance, try effective vegan gummies that you can take every day. You will notice a difference of your nutrients in no time.

Do Not Over-Shampoo

You may have grown up being told to shampoo your hair every day, but for many hair types, it can make hair worse. Over-shampooing leads to dry strands that break more easily. It also strips the hair’s natural oils and contributes to over-production of oil.

You may need to do a test of trial and error to see how often you really need to wash your strands. If you find your hair is producing too much oil, then it may be necessary to train it so that you do not have to wash it as often.

For some types of thick and curly hair, you may only need to wash once a week, if that. A wash day every week or other week can involve a deep shampoo, conditioning, and protective hair products.

Space Out Hair Dye Appointments

If you get your hair dyed regularly, then frequent dyes can be the culprit of dried out and unhealthy hair. You should ask your hairstylist about spacing out your appointments to avoid further damage.

Your stylist may also recommend products that protect strands and preserve color. These can also stretch out the time between dye appointments

Get Healthy Hair Today
